Socioscope blog celebrates its first anniversary!

Tamara Nissanka

It has been a year since the University of Colombo Sociology Students’  Association (UCSSA) launched the socioscope blog. The blog published its first post on 5th December, 2009. Since thenanniversary_1 it has carried essays, poems, photographs, polls, translations and many other kinds of posts contributed by university undergraduates as well as academic staff members. The blog was created by UCSSA to familiarize those from non-sociological backgrounds about topics that interest sociologists. And I think it has achieved this and more during the past year. But the blog still has plenty of room to reach greater heights in the future.

On socioscope’s first anniversary, I would like to thank all our readers for being with us, our contributors for sharing your work with us, and everyone else who worked to promote the blog among the university community and worldwide.

And now it is time to give you a hint about socioscope’s latest project – ‘Undergraduate Research’. A whole new page would be dedicated to introduce our readers to the knowledge that is being produced by Sociology undergraduates of the University of Colombo. You could get to know what their research projects are about, because after all, it could be about you!

So stay in touch with socioscope blog for this and more interesting posts ahead.

The Head of the Department of Sociology, Prof. Sasanka Perera noted that the Art Festival contributed to make the day a special one for the Department of Sociology, and praised the event for being held at a time when university students are generally criticized for not engaging in creative work. Achinthya Bandara, a fourth year student of the Faculty of Arts, who took part in drawing, mentioned that the team work and passion of the UCSSA was appreciated by a lot of people, and that they wished there had been more time to spend with the guest lecturers, Mr. Ranabahu and Mr. Manamperi.
